Intestinal Ultrasound (IUS)

Intestinal ultrasound (IUS) is a procedure used to assess and diagnose conditions of the bowel such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), constipation, bloating, Crohn’s Disease, Diverticulitis and Ulcerative Colitis.

It is completely non-invasive and works by using sound waves from a probe, which bounce off the targeted organs to visualise the small and large bowel via images on a screen. There is no radiation involved.

IUS takes 15-20 minutes and is done in a clinic setting. IUS uses the same equipment as regular abdominal ultrasound however it is performed by specially qualified Gastroenterologists who are trained to identify abnormalities in the intestinal wall. Results are delivered in real-time.

There is no fasting or preparation (although some patients may be requested to arrive with a full bladder). The procedure is not painful and there are no side effects.

IUS is performed at Vermont South Consulting Suites (Flex & Form Therapy)
