Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
Flexible sigmoidoscopy is a procedure where a thin flexible tube with a video camera at the tip is used to inspect the lining of the rectum, anus and lower part of the colon (bowel). The tube is inserted into the rectum and allows the doctor to view and if necessary, take tissue samples (biopsies) of around the last 50cm of the large intestine.
A sigmoidoscopy is less invasive than a colonoscopy, because it only looks at the lower part of your colon. If your doctor finds polyps during your sigmoidoscopy, you may need a colonoscopy to look further into the bowel.
Flexible sigmoidoscopy is done as a day procedure. You will need to modify your diet beforehand (fasting). You do not need to take any bowel preparation at home, but may be given a fleet enema on arrival to the hospital if required. Recovery is usually straightforward with no/minimal after-effects from the procedure. You doctor will discuss the procedure with you in detail if this is recommended for you.
